Horse Racing with black communities in South Africa dates back as far as the 1700’s. To date horse racing is a hugely popular sport in South Africa, with regular racing taking place around the country. It is now a multi- million rand hobby and has many thousands of participants and supporters.

A need exists to develop and grow Traditional Horse Racing which is widely practiced in most rural communities in the Free State Province to a level where it does not only provide recreational pleasure but generate local economic development in areas where it takes place. South African horse racing is hugely popular amongst the rich and famous of the country.

A day at the South African tracks is a glamorous event where all the big spenders come out to play. South Africa is home to 3 famous horse races that take place in three cities. Johannesburg hosts the Summer Cup where the first prize will award you with R 2 million in prize money. Cape Town hosts the Sun Met at Kenilworth Race Course with a R5Million purse preceded 3 weeks prior by the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Durban hosts the primary horse-racing event – the Vodacom Durban July, which has been running since 1987 offers a prize purse of R4,2 million.
